BELLE MER NEWPORT RI WEDDING PHOTOS | PART II

WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY: ROBERTO FARREN

A little late in coming, but here at last is part two of the wonderful Indian wedding that I shot at Belle Mer wedding venue in Newport, Rhode Island with the team at Anna Wu photography. Don’t forget to check out part one here! We return now to pick up the ceremony and celebrations by the coast on a beautiful and perfect summer’s evening in New England.

Arriving ahead of the wedding party for the Christian wedding service gave me some time to capture the exquisite details in the banquet room before everyone settled in for the evening. The colors and the layout of the room were such a pleasure to shoot as the late afternoon sunlight flooded in through the large windows overlooking the sea and ceremony location.

BELLE MER WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

Once I had those images in the bag, I headed outside to capture the Baraat celebrations as the groom came in on a white horse. I have captured Baraats on a number of occasions, and this was one of my favorites. This was when I really noticed the vibrancy of the colors in the outfits.  It is really a special moment to photograph.

From here, it was straight to the back of Belle Mer and to their Hindu celebration. Again, I arrived ahead of everyone and had the chance to get some images before it filled up with guests. The wind blowing in off the sea and catching the colored fabrics made the whole scene very romantic and atmospheric.

With the guests flooding in and getting settled, it wasn’t long before the ceremony was underway. The groom and his family entered, followed shortly after by the bridesmaids and of course, the bride herself.

The light was perfect, the temperature was perfect and the setting was perfect, and with those three falling into place it can be hard to take a bad photo. With a full-length ceremony ahead of me, I was able to capture lots of different angles and aspects. It was hard to stop shooting, to be honest!

With the second ceremony complete, it was time to get the party started! Belle Mer wedding venue is a great spot for a party as well. With the large banquet room and the flowing grounds around the main building you really get a lot from one location. As the guests were starting to settle in for the arrival of the bridal party, I could see that the sunset was going to be a really great one that evening. The landscape photographer in me couldn’t help but get my tripod and filters and get a shot as the sky erupted with color over the Claibourne Pell Suspension Bridge.

I didn’t stay around till the very end of the ceremony, but I was there for some very emotional and moving speeches from both fathers. It was really great to have photographed at Belle Mer wedding venue in Newport RI and I hope to get back there in the very near future. If you are planning a wedding there or anywhere else in the New England area and would like to talk about coverage, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Cheers,

BELLE MER WEDDING PHOTOS | NEWPORT RHODE ISLAND PART 1

WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBERTO FARREN

I had the wonderful opportunity of photographing a beautiful Indian wedding in Newport, Rhode Island at the picturesque, Belle Mer venue. I was shooting alongside West coast based wedding photographer Anna Wu who was the lead photographer on the day.  As I have said before it is always really nice to have the opportunity to shoot alongside other photographers and even more so when it is at new venues here in New England. I have split the post into two parts, this one covering the first look and Catholic ceremony and then another part to come capturing the Indian ceremony back at Belle Mer, so be sure to check back in soon for that.

WEDDING AT BELLE MER NEWPORT RI
BELLE MER WEDDING PHOTOS | NEWPORT RI

Having checked the weather forecast for the day it looked like it was going to be a little hit or miss if we were going to escape without rain, but I am happy to say that despite a few threatening clouds all we got were a few drops while driving between venues. Belle Mer in Newport RI is a stunning venue, placed in an absolutely perfect location. If you are looking to hold your wedding in RI then this place should be on you list of places to check out along with others like the equally great Oceancliff. It was the first time I had met Anna Wu in person but having had a look at her work and chatting over e-mail I knew that it would be great to shoot alongside her.

BELLE MER WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY
BELLE MER WEDDING PHOTOS | NEWPORT RI

Starting with the bride and groom at the hotel which was just a short three minute drive away from Belle Mer meant that we had lots of time to get the preparation photos before heading to do their first look. I concentrated my time shooting with the groom and working with his cousins to nail the tying of the bow tie! With that task in the bag it was off to Belle Mer to get the day really going!

WEDDING BELLE MER RI

The grounds at Belle Mer are equal in grandeur to the inside of the venue and the clean lines and manicured foliage of the outside wall and lawns provided the perfect backdrop for this first meeting on the day. They both looked absolutely stunning and the light breeze that day really made the most of the beautiful long flowing veil.

BELLE MER WEDDING PHOTOS
BELLE MER WEDDING PHOTOS | NEWPORT RI

In case I hadn’t stated it enough the first time round the location of Belle Mer really is a special setting for a wedding. I think the second part of this blog post will show it off even more but for now the photo below gives you a good idea of the backdrop that you are dealing with. After we had done the first look and everyone was getting settled into the day, Anna took the bride and groom off for some photos together. Having an extra take on these can give some unique and different angles as well, and when I’m shooting weddings for my own clients I will often jump into the places like these to make sure that I capture them all.

Doing a first look means that you can get all of the formal bridal party and family photos done before you set out for the ceremony which can make it a little bit more relaxed later on. This worked out great in this situation as the church location was about an 40 minutes away from Belle Mer and so it allowed everything to stay on time and still get all the images from the day. A first look isn’t for everyone but if you are looking to maximize your time on the day then it really is a great option.

I borrowed the groomsmen away for a few shots of just them between some of the other family formals as well.

BELLE MER WEDDING PART ONE

The church where the Catholic ceremony was held was beautiful both inside and out. St Mary’s in Cranston RI was a pleasure to photograph in and also gave the unique opportunity for some stand out images from this part of the day.

With their Catholic ceremony complete, it was time to head back to Belle Mer in Newport for the second part of their day and the Baraat and the  Hindu wedding ceremony that was to take place in the main grounds with the sea and the  Claibourne Pell Suspension Bridge as the backdrop to that. Check back in soon to catch the rest of the day.

Bedford Village Inn Wedding Photography – Brittany and Chris, Part 2

Welcome back to Part two of Brittany and Chris‘ New Hampshire wedding day! Don’t forget to check out part one here as well!!

BEDFORD VILLAGE INN WEDDING

We arrived at the Bedford Village Inn and got ready for the ceremony. The elegant Great Hall was both their ceremony and reception venue, and the rustic but luxurious venue had been decorated beautifully by Brittany’s mother, who runs a greenhouse and garden center in Wilton, NH.

BEDFORD VILLAGE INN WEDDING

Brittany and Chris shared a quick moment together when she arrived, and then they entered the Great Hall together, led by a bagpipe player in honor of Brittany’s family heritage. A close friend officiated the non-denominational ceremony, which included a number of personal touches, including the signing of a Ketubah, which Brittany had specially made as a surprise for Chris. The beautiful, handmade Ketubah was set against the background of the Cliffs of Moher, which they visited on the trip to Ireland where Chris proposed.

After the ceremony, we ventured outside onto the lovely grounds of the Inn, where we took care of all of the group shots for family and friends before snagging Brittany and Chris for a few minutes on their own. The gardens around the Bedford Village Inn provide a number of beautiful backdrops for photos, and Roberto and I enjoyed a quick portrait session with the newlyweds.

We came back inside just in time for brunch to be served, and tucked into a delicious meal before the music started to ramp up. The DJ did a great job getting the dancing started, and Brittany’s young nieces and nephews bounced happily between plates of wedding cake and showing up the adults on the dance floor. Guests mingled, danced and sent Brittany and Chris happy wedding wishes while decked out with props from the photobooth.

Friends and family continued the party well into the night (and morning) at the newlyweds’ home, but we said goodbye with wishes for a happy night and a happy future together. Brit and Chris, thanks for including us in such a special day in your lives, and can’t wait to catch up again soon!

STONEWALL FARM WEDDING KEENE NH

As a wedding photographer here in New England you really are spoiled on some of the locations that you get to shoot. There are such a variety of ceremony and reception venues that people chose to get married in this part of the US that it feels like no two weddings are the same. In the three years that I have been shooting here, there are only a small number of venues that I have shot at more than once. One that I hadn’t shot at until this wedding was a farm in the countryside of New Hampshire, and when good friend and fellow photographer Joe over at JGD design and photography asked me if I would like to shoot alongside him for a wedding he was shooting at Stonewall Farm, I jumped at the chance!

WEDDING PHOTOS AT STONEWALL FARM KEENE NH
STONEWALL FARM WEDDING PHOTOS | KEENE NH

I love to fill any weekend that I am not shooting a wedding for myself by shooting it with some of the other great photographers in and around Boston. It’s a great opportunity to continue learning from friends and colleagues as well as exercising my own creativity. Alex and Andrew were getting married at the wonderful Stonewall Farm in Keene NH not too far from where I was based in NH at the time. The venue is a stunning place to get married with a perfect outdoor area. I arrived early at the venue while Joe was shooting with Alex and this gave me some time to capture the essence of this wonderful place.

Alex and Andrew had a really great day lined up and the details for the day fit in perfectly with the rural farm location. Everything had a rustic feel to it and you knew from the get-go that it was going to be a relaxed but party filled day. Having the ceremony and reception all at Stonewall Farm meant that once the actual wedding was over, it was straight into the cocktail hour and the partying. They both looked great and the ceremony was a wonderful celebration of their love for each other, and was filled with smiles and laughter throughout.

Joe took Alex and Andrew off to get some portraits of just the two of them and this gave me time to get some candid shots of the rest of the guests enjoying the afternoon. There was plenty to do, eat and drink during the cocktail hour that was held outside the main hall of the farm and the perfect late summer weather meant that it was a real pleasure to be outside. There were hay rides, lawn darts being played and a stash of Frisbees meant that people were not short of things to do, you just had to watch out for the flying disks, although they were bright yellow so that helped! :) A live band playing  made the day even more special and it was the perfect afternoon to spend getting married at Stonewall Farm.

When the day moved into the main hall for dining and partying the celebrations stepped up a notch. After the eating, speeches and first dances, this crowd, aided by some great music by DJ Dig-Doug got the party into full force! I don’t think I’ve been at a wedding with such constant movement and dancing throughout the whole night, that was topped off by some crowd surfing by the bride and groom! Alex and Andrew, is was a real pleasure to be a part of your wedding day at Stonewall farm and thank you to Joe for having me along to shoot!

BEDFORD VILLAGE INN WEDDING PHOTOS | BRITTANY AND CHRIS PART 1

WORDS: ERIN FARREN | PHOTOS: ROBERTO FARREN

Brittany and Chris are good friends of ours, and we were so thrilled when they got engaged last year. This wasn’t just because they are an awesome couple, but also because their epic engagement session took Roberto all over scenic southern New Hampshire, with a special pit stop at the Nashua Airport where Chris is a Air Traffic Control Specialist. It was a great day, and Brittany and Chris’ sweet relationship made them naturals in front of the camera. Toss in a few antique cars, a greenhouse, some amazing New Hampshire landscapes, and even a few airplanes, and you’ve got a session made in engagement photography heaven.

We were also thrilled, therefore, when they asked Roberto Farren Photography to capture their wedding day. As the plans started to gain momentum, we knew it was going to be a fun day filled with friends, family and a few surprises. They had chosen the Bedford Village Inn in Bedford, NH as their venue, and set the date for early spring. The Bedford Village Inn is a gorgeous, luxury inn and event venue in New Hampshire that is great for a romantic weekend away, intimate dinner parties or larger wedding celebrations. With wonderful grounds and rustic architecture, Roberto knew that we would be able to get Brittany and Chris some great wedding photos.

WEDDING AT BEDFORD VILLAGE INN NH

When the day finally came, we headed over to Brittany and Chris’ home to get some photos of the couple and some friends and family getting ready. Brittany’s cute niece and nephew provided entertainment (and a few props) while the bride’s wedding party cheerfully tucked into coffee and muffins from a local bakery.

Once Chris headed out to the Bedford Village Inn to start greeting their guests, it was time for Brittany to get in her dress. She looked stunning, Roberto found a good bit of natural light and there was little else to do to get some gorgeous portraits of Brittany before we left for the Inn.

NEW ENGLAND WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY | COLT STATE PARK, RI | LOU AND BECCA

WORDS: ERIN FARREN | PHOTOS: ROBERTO FARREN

When it comes to weddings, the team at Roberto Farren Photography is always up for seeing new places. While many of our events are in and around Boston, it’s always exciting to venture outside our usual stomping grounds and explore new corners of the world. This was definitely the case for Lou and Becca’s recent wedding celebration in Rhode Island. While we’ve been to a few different parts of Rhode Island, including Providence, Block Island, and Newport, neither Roberto nor I had ever been to Colt State Park in Bristol, RI.

We arrived well in advance of the ceremony, and Roberto set off immediately to capture some of the natural beauty of the outdoor venue. Becca and Lou had chosen the lovely outdoor “Chapel-By-The-Sea” for their ceremony, and the mid-May weather was sunny and mild. Colt State Park is a 464 acre park and nature reserve with a variety of landscapes. You’ve got Narragansett Bay to the west, with stone walls, piers and green lawns leading up to the waterfront. In addition, there are manicured gardens, picnic areas, fruit trees and playing fields.  It’s full of natural beauty, and Roberto snapped away while we waited for the couple’s family to arrive. By a stroke of wedding day luck, guests were greeted with the arrival of a famous Del’s Frozen Lemonade Truck, and they were happy to enjoy the refreshing treats until Becca and Lou joined them.

Becca and Lou’s ceremony was celebrated in front of their immediate family. Becca looked lovely in a simple cream dress, and Lou looked dapper in his suit. After the ceremony, we were able to get through all of the family portraits in Becca and Lou’s shot list, and then we had over an hour with the newlyweds for wedding photos at Colt State Park.

It is great to have this much time with a couple, as it allows them to have portraits in a number of locations. We took advantage of the beautiful day and variety of landscapes around the Park, and Roberto was able to get some great wedding photos for Becca and Lou. There are loads to choose from, but I think my favorites are the ones taken on the pier in Narragansett Bay.

After we finished up, we headed over to Via Roma for the wedding reception. Located in the Federal Hill neighborhood in Providence which is known for its Italian American community, Via Roma was a great venue that came up trumps in providing a delicious Italian buffet.

After tucking into a delicious meal, the celebration turned to the dance floor. Roberto was able to steal Becca and Lou outside for one last set of wedding photos. We took advantage of the twinkle lights at a nearby neighborhood cafe before saying congrats and goodnight to Becca and Lou. Hope you had a great honeymoon cycling through Maine!

Boston Engagement Photography | Colleen and Emmet

Words: Erin Farren | Photos: Roberto Farren

This winter, Colleen and Emmet got in touch with Roberto about an engagement photography session in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood. Officially based in Ireland, Colleen and Emmet were spending a short part of their engagement separated by the Atlantic as Colleen did a clinical rotation in a Boston hospital as part of her medical training. Emmet, still based in Ireland, flew over to see her as often as possible, and it was during one of these visits that we caught up with the couple for their engagement photos.

A BOSTON ENGAGEMENT PHOTO

The couple looked lovely, wearing great colors that popped against the red brick buildings in the Back Bay.  We wandered around with them through the brisk evening, snapping away as we passed through the historic neighborhood with its unique architecture. Roberto had a few places in mind, but we also stumbled upon some great scenes on the way, including a tarnished green bay window and a stretch of stone wall where their shadows fell perfectly.

BOSTON ENGAGEMENT PHOTOS

As we got close to finishing up, Roberto had one more shot in mind, but we needed the sun to go down. We ducked into Lolita’s for a quick drink to warm up while we waited. It was great to have a chat with Colleen and Emmet and hear about how they met and their plans for their future. We also had fun swapping stories of the crazy distances we were willing to travel for love, as Roberto and I also had the Atlantic between us when we first started dating.

Soon after sunset, we headed back outside for one more set of photos. The Commonwealth Avenue Mall is the strip of green that serves as a median between the east and westbound stretches of Comm Ave. Part of Boston’s “Emerald Necklace“, the Mall links the Back Bay Fens and the Public Gardens. Dotted with historic statues and impressive elm trees, the sun-dappled promenade is a favorite for runners and dog walkers alike. In the evenings, twinkle lights sparkle in the trees, and this is where we headed with Colleen and Emmet. Roberto set up some longer exposures and I put my biceps to work with the video light, and we captured the wonderful wintry scene.

Proposal Photography Boston – She said “Yes”!

Words: Erin Farren | Photos: Roberto Farren

Adding a few new bullet points to my photography assistant résumé, I recently helped Roberto with a sneak attack Boston proposal photo shoot. It was pretty nerve-wracking, but loads of fun, and it was amazing to capture the moment when 2 peoples’ lives change forever. Patrick got in touch with Roberto to discuss his surprise proposal, and it was exciting to be involved in the planning and buildup. They met in advance to discuss the route that Patrick would be taking with his soon-to-be fiancé, where Roberto should set up, the decoy (me!) and the back story.

Patrick had told Kerry that they were meeting his work colleagues for drinks and dinner. It is a relatively new job for Patrick, so Kerry was nervous about meeting lots of new people for the first time. They were to walk on a set path to the fictional party at a restaurant along the Boston waterfront’s Fan Pier.  Roberto was going to be set up and taking photos of me in a pretend photo shoot, all the while sneakily snapping photos of them over my shoulder with a long range lens.

I tried to wear clothes that might pass for photo-ready, but at the last minute I panicked that I might get chilly and grabbed a fleece out of the car, completely ruining the effect. Regardless, I did my very best posing and Roberto snapped away while we kept our eyes peeled for Patrick and Kerry’s entrance. Roberto spotted them first, and gave me the signal (a surreptitious double cough) while he kept snapping away. Patrick walked right by us on his way to the place where he was going to pop the question, and they were chatting happily as they strolled along through the beautiful evening.

Patrick then led Kerry down onto the lower walkway, and she looked none the wiser until he dropped down on one knee.

I was facing away from the couple, but knew what was happening when I heard a sharp intake of breath from a couple of strangers that were sitting on a nearby bench. This is when I started babbling “Can I look? Can I look? Can I look?” to Roberto. Ever the professional, Roberto didn’t break cover until after Patrick was back on his feet and hugging Kerry, then I heard him tell her “And see that guy down there with the camera…?”

ENGAGEMENT PROPOSAL PHOTOS BOSTON

You could tell by her shaking hands and the shock on her face that Kerry was surprised, and she needed to sit for a moment to take it all in.

While she was catching her breath, Patrick filled her in on his sneaky planning and which members of her family were excitedly awaiting her phone call.  After congratulations all around (did I mention that she said “yes”?) Roberto grabbed some photos of the newly engaged couple with the Boston skyline and the beautiful sunset as a backdrop.

You can see the happiness in their smiles, and Roberto and I wished them a happy engagement before they walked back into the sunset and towards home.

Top Cambridge Wedding Venues – From A to Zebras

Hi, it’s Erin here again!  For today’s continuation of the top wedding venues in the Boston area, we’re hopping on the Red Line and heading over the Charles River to Cambridge for three of my faves:

  1. Dante Restaurant – Cambridge, MA | www.restaurantdante.com | A great venue in Cambridge is just over the Longfellow Bridge from Boston.  Part of the Royal Sonesta Hotel, Dante provides great food and a versatile event space.  Chef Dante de Magistris provides delicious, fresh Italian cuisine and some tasty looking cocktails. In addition, the space is awesome. If you’re into a set up where guests can flow from one space to another, including outdoor patios, swanky bar area, comfy lounges, and dining rooms, Dante is definitely worth putting on your list. And the location can’t be beat! You’ve got amazing views of the Charles River and Boston Skyline, which makes for some awesome wedding photos, with canals and manicured gardens just a short walk away at the Charles River Reservation and Lechmere Canal. Check out Mike and Denise’s recent wedding at Dante for more info.
BOSTON WEDDING VENUES | DANTE
  1. Museum of Science – Cambridge, MA | www.mos.org | Not only is this one of the coolest museums in the area, but it also ranks up there as one of the most unique wedding venues in Cambridge. Originally from New Hampshire, this was always the most exciting school field trip of the year for me when I was growing up.  Packed with dinosaurs, a massive Rube Goldberg machine, and an amazing interactive electricity exhibit, you’ve definitely got plenty of interesting photo opportunities at the ready if you decide to hold your wedding reception in one of the areas inside the museum (options include the museum’s Blue Wing, Riverview Café, or the entire Museum). However if you don’t want to spend your whole wedding day geeking out (which is fair…) the Museum of Science has a number of rooms that might be just what you’re looking for.  With some amazing views looking back into Boston with the Charles River spreading out beneath you, the Skyline room and d’Arbeloff Suite are a great option. Another option is the Washburn Pavillion on the back lawn of the Museum, which is a beautiful marquee tent surrounded by landscaped gardens on three sides and the Charles River on the fourth. The Museum of Science is definitely worth a look as your wedding site, whether or not your theme involves Triceratops. Check out Katie and Ryan’s recent wedding reception at the Museum of Science for a better look at the d’Arbeloff Suite and balcony!

  1. Upstairs on the Square – Cambridge, MA | www.upstairsonthesquare.com | I literally cannot say enough about Upstairs on the Square. Between the location, the flexibility of the rooms, the food, and the team, it is definitely one of my top venues in Boston or Cambridge for weddings. For the location, you’re smack in Harvard Square. Walk 2 minutes in any direction, and you can be in Harvard Yard, at John Weeks Bridge, on the banks of Charles River, or in John F. Kennedy Park. That is, if you want to leave at all – Upstairs on the Square has some of the coolest, most unique décor of any venue I’ve seen. The jade colored, high-ceilings of the Monday Club Bar adjoin the aptly named Zebra Room, done up in pink, gold and zebra, and overlooking the twinkle lights and buskers of Winthrop Square. Upstairs, you’ve got the Soirée Dining Room and Jewel Box Bar, best for seated dinners, and you are going to need to sit down for these dinners, because the food at Upstairs is amazing. Fresh, seasonal ingredients are turned artfully into amazing meals that taste like they’ve been made to order just for you. Their food is second only to their team, who are some of the best in the business.  Every member of their staff is cordial, welcoming, and helpful, and it’s no wonder that they win awards left, right and center for their hospitality. Everyone has different priorities when they’re planning their wedding, but if you’re looking for a city-based venue with delicious food, in a unique setting, with super hospitality, Upstairs on the Square has to be on top of your list. Check out Caitlin and Aaron’s recent wedding reception at Upstairs for a better look!

Continuing through our day with Caitlin and Aaron at their beautiful Cambridge wedding, we headed back to the Harvard Memorial Church and let the couple duck into their respective preparation rooms for a few minutes with their families before their marriage.  This allowed Roberto to spend a few minutes capturing both the beautiful church, and the expectant guests at the wedding. Don’t forget to check out part one of their Harvard Memorial Church wedding here.

When it was time for the ceremony to begin, Caitlin walked down the aisle accompanied by her father to a tune played by the Harvard organist.  A pink dress isn’t the choice for a timid bride, but Caitlin pulled it off amazingly well, and she looked stunning as she joined Aaron at the altar.

The moving ceremony was soon over, and the newlyweds made their way to the steps of the church for wedding photos with their family and friends.  They were blocked, however, by a few of Caitlin’s brothers and friends. The four United States Marines, clad in their dress whites, presented the couple with a saber arch upon their exit from the church. After happily paying the required toll of a kiss to his new bride, Aaron was allowed to escort Caitlin through to the cheers of their families and friends.

After portraits on the steps of the Memorial Church, the newlyweds and their bridal party took the long route through Harvard Yard for more portraits together.  We drew quite the crowd of spectators and well-wishers as our procession made our way through Harvard’s campus (Harvard’s graduation was taking place a few days later, and Cambridge was full of visiting families) and even had a few amateur photographers taking snaps of the happy group.  One last stop for photos at the famous ‘Out of Town News’ (located at Zero Harvard Square) and we were ready for the reception.

As a venue, Caitlin and Aaron selected the Soiree Room of the unique Upstairs on the Square.  The Soiree Room, also known as the “Jewel Box” room for it’s pink, gold and mirrored accents, is a beautiful, intimate venue for a wedding or other celebration dinner.  The food is great (GREAT) and the staff are helpful, efficient and extremely friendly. Roberto and I are heading here for another wedding later this summer, and I’m already looking forward to working there again.  After the speeches, the dinner and the cake came some dancing, and soon enough, it was time to exit.

Taking a cue from their earlier attempt to leave the Memorial Church, their guests decided not to let them leave the wedding venue without some excitement.  All of Caitlin and Aaron’s wedding guests lined the walkway from Upstairs on the Square, and instead of a Saber Arch, they exited through a massive arch of sparklers.  It was a beautiful way to end a beautiful day, and then the newlyweds disappeared into the night.
