BEACON HILL ENGAGEMENT SHOOT

I met Emily and Carlos back in October 2011 on a wintery night out in Waltham to discuss their Boston wedding photography coverage, and I was extremely happy when a week or so later they said that they would like me to shoot their day. They are getting married next month at the Nine Zero Hotel in Boston just near Park Street and the State House, with what sounds like a very wonderful and intimate wedding.

We had spoken about doing an engagement shoot in Boston and were waiting for the weather to pick up a little, not that this winter was a bad one at all. Emily and Carlos both love the Beacon Hill part of Boston and this would prove to be a great location for their engagement shoot. We met up at the Nine Zero Hotel so that we could go through the location and check the venue and see where they were going to have their day. We then had just a short stroll across Boston Common and into the Beacon Hill area.

We start off at the very beautifully cobbled Acorn Street. This wonderful old street provided the perfect backdrop to start Emily and Carlos’ Beacon Hill engagement session. Whilst the weather hadn’t been as warm as it had been just a few days before, we still had a very nice day to shoot.

It was great fun working with these two and I really can’t wait for their wedding day next month! Engagement sessions really are a great way to get to know each other as well as to capture some really great shots! It means that come the wedding day you are more comfortable in front of the camera and we can concentrate on capturing those great emotion between the two of you.

After shooting on some more of the wonderful streets around Beacon Hill, we stopped in for a quick coffee and ice tea break! We popped back out again just to catch the sun starting to drop over Boston and to give us the opportunity to get a couple of lens flared shots to finish off their Boston engagement session.

Christening photography | Boston MA

Since I have been in Boston I have had the opportunity to capture Christening and Baptism photographs for a few couples and the very important moment for their newborn children. As a wedding photographer in MA, I’m more often in Church for weddings (or to attend Mass myself), but the opportunity to photograph this moment in a couple’s life and Christening of their child, is equally as great a pleasure to capture.

Christenings are important milestones in a child and a couple’s life, just as their weddings were. To have images and photographs of this moment is a great thing to look back on over the years to come.

I hope that as I establish myself here in Boston as a wedding photographer, that down the line I will have the chance to work with some of the couples whose weddings I have photographed and have the chance to photograph the Baptism of their children as they expand the family unit.

Christening and Baptism photography can follow the same style as wedding day coverage, without maybe the preparation shots. There is normally a wonderful service or Mass that provides the opportunity to capture the Sacrament in candid detail and many times family get together from different parts of the country or world, providing the opportunity to photograph people that may not often meet up.

CHRISTENING AND FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY BOSTON AND MA

The celebrations after, although not on the same scale as a wedding can be just as great to photograph and again give rise to opportunities for some wonderful photos.

FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY AT BENSON’S ANIMAL FARM IN HUDSON NH

I was contacted just before Christmas by Michelle with an inquiry to shoot some family portraits of her and her siblings as a present for her parents wedding anniversary, which was on Valentines Day. They were based up in southern New Hampshire, and when they called I had the perfect place to get them some family shots.

A little while back, my wife and I were told about the rejuvenation of Benson’s Animal Farm, and all the changes that had been made in the last couple of years. I unfortunately never knew it in its original glory, but my wife can remember going there as a child and often remembered seeing the elephants and the giraffes from the road, on the way driving into school.

They have recently revamped this place, and it is now a true gem of a place for families and anyone wanting to take a walk or even enjoy a spot of fishing in the pond. Benson’s Animal Park has been transformed, thanks to the hard work and efforts of the local community, who got together and made this place a really great asset to Hudson and New Hampshire once more. If you haven’t already, I would definitely encourage a trip to Benson’s as well as “liking” their Facebook page here.

Benson’s now has wonderful cared for gardens and landscapes, as well as a touch of more natural habitat as well. This has made Benson’s a great location to have family photos taken, and I hope that in the spring and summer, I’ll get to work with a lot more families to capture their New England family photos here.

From the wonderful variety of plants, the perfect backdrop of the pond and trees around it, and the great old buildings at the top of the hill, you are really spoilt for choice when it comes to locations for photographing families. The open spaces and brand new playgrounds make it great for little ones as well to have a run around in.

For Michelle and her brother and sister, we wanted to get some great photos of them all together, as well as some individual shots. They were awesome to shoot with and it was a great idea for an anniversary present to their parents. While it would have been nice to have had a little snow on the scene to make for a more seasonal feel, Benson’s Animal Park is such a great location to photograph that it didn’t really matter. That, and the fact that these guys were such a pleasure to work with.

My First year as a Boston wedding photographer and locations I would like to photograph

It has been over a year now that I have been photographing here in the USA and just over a year and a half that I have been living here in Boston with my wonderful wife, Erin. After a settling period of getting my head around the move from the UK, I threw all of my efforts at making my dream of becoming a successful wedding photographer here in Boston a reality.

Last year was a really big year, filled with all the ups and downs that come with a move to a new country, the excitement of new things and the missing of those that are more familiar. Some days I felt I could have packed it all in and headed home, and others the exact opposite. Failing my US driving test the first time round (yes it is actually possible, even having driven for years) was definitely one of those low days, while sitting up in the White Mountains in New Hampshire camping with Erin and cooking the evening meal over a camp fire felt the exact difference.

CAMPING IN THE WHITES, NH

So now that I have started to establish myself here in Boston and already having worked with some absolutely fabulous couples, I’m even more excited for this year and all those that I am going to get to work with.

Being one of the many Boston wedding photographers, I’m always looking at locations that would make for fantastic photo opportunities. While location is only a small part of what makes a great photo – light being of the utmost importance – I still have a list of places where I would love to photograph engagement sessions or weddings.

I would love to offer the chance for couples that would like to have their Boston engagement photos taken at a location off my hit list an extra 10X15 print on top of the other sizes that are included in the package. Even if you aren’t getting married, but would love some engagement style photos taken with yourself and your partner, then please get in touch.

So where are they then?

Walden Pond – Lincoln MA. A fantastic location with some really great settings and wonderful evening light covering the eastern side of the pond.
The deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum – Lincoln MA. A wonderful location that I have only visited the once, and am hoping to get back to soon. Wonderful sculptures placed in a beautifully landscaped setting.
The North End – Boston MA. I loved this part of town from my first visit to watch some of the Italian football (I still can’t bring myself to call it soccer) games from the World Cup in 2010. It has a great charm about the place and would make for some stunning Boston engagement shots.
Bunker Hill – Boston MA. Views over looking the city and water front access. You don’t get much more Boston monumental than this.
The Harbor Islands – Boston MA. After a trip out there last summer, I noted a number of places that would make for some really great Boston engagement session photos.

This is obviously just a small list of places in and around Boston that would make for some great engagement photos and as I am going through and writing these down, 20 others are popping into my head. BOSTON ENGAGEMENT PHOTOS – VALENTINES DAY 2012 COMPETITION

WINTER WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY IN MASSACHUSETTS

I had met Nicole and Shane back in the spring of 2011 when I was just getting settled living here in Boston MA after moving from London. We had taken their engagement photos in the Public Gardens in Boston and you can take a look at those photos earlier in the blog. We had a great time then and afterwards I had the honor of being asked by them both if I was available to photograph their MA wedding day in January of 2012.

MA WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

For a January day in New England the weather was turning out to be very nice indeed. I had prepared myself for freezing cold temperatures and feet of snow but was instead presented with 63F, the sun shining and not even a breeze in the air. This was a perfect day for Nicole and Shane’s day and a great day for me as a wedding photographer in MA to be presented with these conditions at this time of year. It meant that we would be able to shoot outside for longer before we all lost feeling in our fingers and toes.

I started off with Nicole and her bridal party and immediate family at the hotel just down the road from the Church in Randolph MA. I had the chance to meet the rest of the girls and capture the wedding preparations for Nicole and the rest of the bridesmaids. The little children their were awesome to work with and they gave me such a great reception, running up to me and giving me a hug even though I had never met them. I knew we would get some great photos with them throughout the day.

Nicole looked stunning in her dress as did the rest of her party. With her mum adding the final touches, I knew that we were going to get her some really great photos before the ceremony started. We had little while before leaving for the church and as well as capturing those un-staged moments in gave me the chance to work with some great light that was coming through the window.

After capturing these shots of Nicole, it was time to get over to the Church in Randolph to capture Nicole’s arrival there.

Being new to the region this wedding gave me the chance as a Boston wedding photographer to shoot in a new location. The First Baptist Church in Randolph is a great building and provided the perfect backdrop for Nicole and Shane’s big day. It was a beautiful ceremony and you could tell that this was a very special group of friends and family attending.

After a wonderful wedding ceremony we made the most of the unseasonably warm weather and move outside the church for the group shots. The guys were looking very dapper and Shane was looking just as smart as the day I had first met with him and Nicole back last Spring. They were all really great fun to work with.

Nicole and Shane had a wonderful reception planned and I’m sure that they had the day that they had exactly planned spending their MA wedding day in the company of great friends and family.

Landscape photography in frozen Wells, ME.

Winter Landscapes Maine

I had wanted to get out yesterday morning to get a shot at Wells Harbor, ME, that I had had in mind for a little while. With the snow covering the ground I was hoping that we would get a nice sunrise to compliment the foreground but yesterday it was lacking a little something in the sky. This morning wasn’t as colourful as I had hoped but decided that it was time to brave the cold and see if the shot would work.

I had photographed a wedding in MA last weekend and during the day the temperature had risen as high as 68F and it felt like a spring day. This morning leaving the house at 06:30 it decidedly did not feel like a spring day, with the thermometer in the car registering a rather fresh -1F and the breeze making it feel a little colder, I knew that I wasn’t going to be lasting too long.

This first shot was taken just behind Lords restaurant next to the harbor, with the marsh steaming in the background.

The next shot was taken on the drive back and again was an image that I have been waiting to capture. Hopefully tomorrow will bring a little more colour into the sky and this may be worth another visit.
