Questions to ask when choosing your wedding photographer

Choosing your Boston wedding photographer.

So I thought I would offer some insight from a Boston wedding photographers perspective on how you should go about selecting who you want to take your wedding photos on the big day.

This can feel like a tough challenge, and finding a good match is essential with regards to the end result. I would recommend starting your search early and having a good idea of what it is you want from your wedding photographer in Boston. Remember, on the actual day you will be spending a lot of time with your chosen photographer, so getting someone you can work with will make the memories of your day so much better.

To start you should first consider the style of photography that you wish to have your day captured in. These days, there is not just one style of wedding photography. Traditional wedding photography is no longer the only type, and long are the days of formal group shots filling your wedding album. Traditional still has a place, but now photojournalistic photography and fashion photography are forcing their way firmly onto the scene. I for example shoot an editorial style of wedding photography in Boston. This takes in both a documentary aspect from photojournalism with some traditional and unique posed shots.

Your budget will come into affect as you then look for photographers that are within a range that you have set. Your wedding photography budget may be something you are tempted to cut back on, but it will be your photos that you look back on in the coming years to remember your day by. Always go for the best photographer you can and remove any package additions you don’t need. You can always add on things like albums later and they can make very good presents from guests at your wedding. I have a completely customizable set up and work with my clients after their actual wedding to produce albums and anything else I can help with. Even a year or more down the line, if a client gets in touch and asks for an album then, I’m always happy to help.

Some questions that you may want to ask yourself and your photographer before deciding:

1. Have you seen enough of their work? You should be asking to view images from complete weddings they have shot in the past and not just view their online portfolios. Get a complete idea of what you can expect.

2. What should I include in my wedding package? Each photographer offers a little something different, but the fundamentals will be similar. Sit down and write out the main things that you want from your photographer, be it an engagement shoot beforehand, reprint rights to your photos or your album choices after and go through this list with your prospective photographers.

3. Who owns the copyright to the photographs? These belong to the photographer who took your images. However this doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to make copies of the photos. Most photographers include the option to purchase the reprint rights to your photographs so that you may make copies of them whenever you want. Usually the restrictions are that you cannot use these images commercially, (for example to promote your own wedding photography business).

4. When should I sign the wedding photography contract? Once you feel happy with your choice of photographer you should sign the contract as soon as possible. Without signing the contract, Boston wedding photographers are unlikely to keep that date saved for you and it could mean that the photographer of your choice takes another booking for that day. A nonrefundable deposit at the time of signing is normally expected to reserve this day, as the Boston wedding photographer you have chosen is putting this date aside for you and turning down further opportunities of work.

Picking your wedding photographer

5. What should be included in the contract? The names of the bride and groom as well as the photographer should be included in the contract along with contact information for all. The contract should also include  information related to;

All locations that will be shot during the wedding day,

Any on the day requirements for actual photographs (normally groups shots or individuals) or photographer requirements such as food provision or breaks.

The package choices you have made along with itemized billing details for these,

The copyright policy regarding the images and what reprint rights you will have on them,

The deposit amount and when this and the final payments are to be made,

Any cancellation or refund policy, if available.

6.  Will it be the person I met that will photograph my Boston wedding?  I personally shoot every Boston wedding that I book, and while this will be the case most of the time, there are larger Boston wedding photography studios that have a number of photographers associated. If this is the case then make sure that you meet the actual person that will be covering your day to check for compatibility.

7. Are you comfortable with the photographer? This might be the most important question that you ask yourself, and the reason why it is so important to meet your photographer in person. If you are not comfortable with your wedding photographer, your photos will show it. Despite the nerves and excitement of the day, you should feel relaxed and comfortable with your photographer. The best wedding photographers have a way of getting the best out of you on your big day, and engagement shoots are a great way to determine if this is the case.

I hope that this has helped a little in providing some insight into how to go about booking your Boston wedding photographer. If you are interested in booking me for coverage of you Boston wedding, then please get in touch via the contact page on my website and I look forward to hopefully hearing some of the questions above from you soon.

Boston engagement shoot on Acorn Street in Beacon Hill

I had the great pleasure of meeting with Rachel and Evan this past weekend to shoot their Boston engagement photographs. And the heat was on!

After the high temperatures of the previous two days in New England, Saturday proved to be only mildly cooler. So armed with a good few bottles of cold water and blotting paper we headed to Beacon Hill and the beautiful Acorn Street. Rachel and Evan were a truly great pleasure to work with and my thanks are extended to them for allowing me to keep them in the heat to get them some really great photos.

This really unique spot provides a wonderful old New England setting, with a very classic Boston feel, and is one of my favorite engagement shoot locations. The old cobbled street and street lamps create a great atmosphere and perfect backdrop for a Boston wedding or engagement shoot.

The Beacon Hill area is a favorite with Boston wedding photographers, and in addition to Acorn Street, provides some other really striking backdrops. Its location close to the Boston Common, allowed us to head there afterwards to continuing shooting, as the sun dropped down over the Northeast for a beautiful sunset.

I’m really looking forward to shooting with Rachel and Evan on their actual wedding day down in Newport, RI, as they were such a great pleasure to work with on the engagement shoot. A wedding by the sea should provide us with slightly cooler weather as well!

Best Maine Photographs

My best Maine photographs so far, from The Nubble, York through to Cape Porpoise.

As a landscape photographer, I have been traveling to Maine on a regular basis since last September, trying to add shots to my landscape portfolio of the local area. I have built up a collection so far that I am very happy with, although I am continuously looking to improve upon and add to. My landscapes thus far have been based geographically between two Maine landmarks; the Nubble lighthouse in York and Cape Porpoise, some 25 miles to the north.  This stretch of coastline is home to some very wonderful and varied landscapes and great photographic opportunities. I love shooting Boston and New England weddings, but I’ll struggle to convince a bride and groom to get up at 4AM to capture some of the best light of the day.

I rise before sunrise and always have my shooting location in mind before I go to bed in the evening.  This gives me plenty of time to get to location to capture the beautiful sunrises over the Atlantic Sea and the perfect light that brings.  Rivaled only by the evening sunset light maybe, it is hard to beat a sunrise over the northeastern coast of the USA. The mornings offer a greater sense of tranquility and I often find that my only companions at that time of day are either the lobster men who beat me out of bed by a good few hours, a solitary dog walker, making the most of having the run of the beach to themselves or rather unfortunately the mosquitoes that will incessantly bite me if I have forgotten to apply a good dose of deet filled repellant.

I have recently been taken on by one of Kennebunkport’s leading art galleries, The Northlight Gallery, to display and sell my images of the local area. It is a great privilege to have a space here in this gallery, as it carries some of the very best local artist from the area and greater New England. If you are in Kennebunkport, then I would strongly advise a trip into the gallery to see some of the wonderful work on offer by these artists.

Having built a good start to my collection of landscape shots here, taking in Kennebunkport and Kennebunk as well, I thought I should post my best photographs taken here in Maine so far and have disperse them through this post. If you would like to check out some of my other work please visit my landscape portfolio by clicking here, which is constantly being updated to reflect my latest work. MAINE LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY

PARSONS BEACH, WELLS MAINE

With the sun still an hour off rising, it looked like the cloud coverage was going to make for a nice sunrise when it would finally break. I packed up the car and drove down to Parsons Beach for 04:30 to give me plenty of time to find the shot for the morning. As a wedding photographer you have to be prepped and ready to go and once you are shooting time can just fly past. The exact same can be said for shooting landscapes. You want to give yourself lots of prep time and have your gear ready to go so that when that exact shot is there you are in the right location with the right equipment to capture it.

The early start paid off and the sun broke through and the colours in the sky erupted. The only thing I would have changed from this morning was packing some mosquito repellent, as I have a few good bites for my efforts getting this scene.

Top 10 Boston Wedding Photographers

Top 10 wedding photographers in Boston

One of the great things about being a photographer is being part of a community of artists. We all have the opportunity to share our work with each other, and can learn and share an amazing amount of information by working with and viewing the work of our fellow photographers.

For a while, I’ve wanted to put down some thoughts related to my personal top ten wedding photographers, and thought I would start by composing a list close to my new hometown of Boston, USA. I have looked through a lot of Boston Wedding photographers as well as wedding photographers back in London, across the UK, and all across the world.

I’m available for weddings throughout the New England area so please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me should you wish to inquire about coverage for your day through Roberto Farren Photography. I always aim to get you the exact coverage that you are looking for.

BEST BOSTON WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY
WWW.ROBERTOFARRENPHOTOGRAPHY.COM

The level of expectation from a Boston wedding photographer has increased dramatically in the past few years, and the new talent hitting the scene has done a lot to refresh what was previously a somewhat traditional and maybe stagnant area of photography. Wedding photography is now fun and fresh, and is a great place to express some of your best ideas. With that in mind I’m going to go with some more recognized names, as well as some of the up and coming names that are just busting onto the Boston Wedding Photography scene. In no particular order, here goes:

SARGENT PHOTOWORKS

A definite in my top 10 Boston wedding photography list, with creative photography, in both the documentary and posed shots, and great use of lighting and angles.

KATE McELWEE

Got to get a fellow Brit in there! No bias though, she captures those, “gone in the blink of an eye” moments perfectly, and has a great originality to all her shots, just what you want from your wedding photographer.

BRYCE VICKMARK

Stunning shots in both the wedding and engagement albums. His photojournalistic background can clearly be seen in these wonderful images.

SHANG CHEN PHOTOGRAPHY

Clean, crisp and strong images, which really capture the feel of the day. You can see people are relaxed in front of the camera, which is something you definitely want from your photographer.

TYRA BLEEK PHOTOGRAPHY

Taking it back to the “old school” with a modern twist. Great vintage feel to the well- taken shots, that definitely step away from traditional wedding photography.

LUKAS PHOTOGRAPHY

The beautiful black and white photography was what caught my eye with this one. The documentary style captures great, timeless images that work well in color as well.

LISA RIGBY

Beautifully captured and composed images, which are wonderfully lit and render the moment perfectly. Not much more you could ask of your wedding photographer.

PERSON AND KILLIAN

A force on the Boston Wedding Photography scene, and so they should be. Stand out images and awesome post-production work from this well-established Boston team puts them in my top 10 Boston wedding photographers.

JEN ING PHOTOGRAPHY

Well-captured images that are perfectly processed, with strong wedding and engagement galleries that really give you a good idea of her style and vision.

MELISSA COE PHOTOGRAPHY

Nice use of lighting and post-production work to create some wonderful images that show really great vision.

So that is my list from Boston, which is by no means right or wrong, and is obviously limited to the work of the photographers that I have come across. There are some really great ones out there that didn’t make the list, as well as some that I am yet to find. I’m eager to find out who else you think should have made the grade, so please feel free to leave a comment.

Boston engagement photography on the River Charles

As a Boston wedding photographer, it is always nice to meet a couple for their Boston engagement shoot. Not only does it give them an idea of how I work and let them see a personalized sample of my style of photography, but it also gives me the chance to build a connection with the couple prior to their actual wedding day. I think that this is really important, as it is always nicer to have worked with someone and establish a rapport before I turn up to capture one of the biggest days of their lives.

I meet with all clients before their wedding day and talk through all the details of it thoroughly beforehand, but having them in front of the camera develops a greater connection between me and them. An engagement shoot is a fun and stress free affair, where there shouldn’t be many time constraints and where I can really get to know them. It should be something that becomes  a fond memory, and the couple can walk away with some really great shots to remember it by. Having shared that with a couple makes it so much nicer when you are shooting their actual day. It’s very useful for a couple to look through my online galleries of wedding images to see how other peoples photos came out, but it is not until they see themselves in my photos that they really know that they are going to love them.

I recently did a Boston engagement shoot for a couple at the newly developed park opposite the Science Museum in Cambridge, MA. This was my first same-sex engagement shoot here in Boston and I was really pleased with how the photos came out, as were the couple. The weather wasn’t great, but we managed to get a good lot of photos before the skies finally decided to open up on us. It was great fun though, and we had a good chance to chat and find out a little more about each other, and I came away having met a great couple and being able to deliver them some shots  that we were all really pleased with.

Boston Engagement shoot at the Public Gardens

Boston Wedding photographer, Roberto Farren has some exciting news!  I’m offering a limited number of free engagement sessions here in New England. As a photographer working within a community, people want to see shots of their local area. As I work to establish myself here in the US, it is an exciting challenge to add photos of my new homebase to my portfolio.

photocrati gallery

What better way to do that than to provide a limited number of free engagement sessions* for couples, so that they are aware of the quality of service that I provide, while at the same time allowing me to build my portfolio of work in the local area? Photos from this post were taken at a recent free engagement shoot that I did for a couple in the Public Gardens at Boston Common.

*please note that the free engagement sessions offer has expired.

Roberto Farren Photography at the Nonantum Resort Wedding Fair in Maine

At the beginning of this May, I took part in the Nonantum Resort Spring Wedding Fair as a vendor. This was the first wedding fair I have done here in the USA, and I must say that it was really great fun.

image

As a wedding photographer, it is always nice to meet people in person rather than pinging e-mails back and forth without getting to put a face to the name. It was great to chat to some of the couples that had come along that day and I hope to be working with some of them over the coming months. It was great to also meet with some of the other vendors based in this part of the world. They were all very friendly and had some great tips and advice for establishing my business in New England. I hope that over the next few months and years, that I’ll get the chance to be working alongside many of them and provide a top quality service for couples getting married in the area.

Being based in Boston at present gives me great flexibility, as I can travel north to Maine and New Hampshire to cover weddings, but still photograph events in Massachusetts and down the Cape. I hope to be taking part in more wedding fairs in the upcoming months, and look forward to getting to know more couples and other professionals.

If you are interested in wedding photography coverage, please stop by my website and take the time to look through my galleries. Feel free to then get in touch to arrange a meeting or an engagement shoot.

Photography in Kennebunkport ME

Back at the end of last summer, I headed to Maine with my wife to visit her sister’s godmother who lives in the town of Wells, between Kennebunkport and Ogunquit. Since then, I have been up a number of times and have got to know that stretch of coastline very well, enough to put together a good-sized portfolio of images. On the 22nd of May 2011, I am taking part in the “Breakfast with the Artist” series at the Nonantum Resort in Kennebunkport, where I’ll have the opportunity to show these images to local artists and guests staying there. If you happen to be in the area, then please feel free to stop by and say hello. I’ll be there from 8AM-1PM.

Roberto Farren Photography is now taking bookings for wedding and family photography in the New England area. I recently relocated to the states with my wife Erin to be close to her family, and try life out on this side of the pond. After a ‘settling-in’ period I’m now up and running with my photography services here in the US.
