WINTER WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY IN MASSACHUSETTS

I had met Nicole and Shane back in the spring of 2011 when I was just getting settled living here in Boston MA after moving from London. We had taken their engagement photos in the Public Gardens in Boston and you can take a look at those photos earlier in the blog. We had a great time then and afterwards I had the honor of being asked by them both if I was available to photograph their MA wedding day in January of 2012.

For a January day in New England the weather was turning out to be very nice indeed. I had prepared myself for freezing cold temperatures and feet of snow but was instead presented with 63F, the sun shining and not even a breeze in the air. This was a perfect day for Nicole and Shane’s day and a great day for me as a wedding photographer in MA to be presented with these conditions at this time of year. It meant that we would be able to shoot outside for longer before we all lost feeling in our fingers and toes.

I started off with Nicole and her bridal party and immediate family at the hotel just down the road from the Church in Randolph MA. I had the chance to meet the rest of the girls and capture the wedding preparations for Nicole and the rest of the bridesmaids. The little children their were awesome to work with and they gave me such a great reception, running up to me and giving me a hug even though I had never met them. I knew we would get some great photos with them throughout the day.

Nicole looked stunning in her dress as did the rest of her party. With her mum adding the final touches, I knew that we were going to get her some really great photos before the ceremony started. We had little while before leaving for the church and as well as capturing those un-staged moments in gave me the chance to work with some great light that was coming through the window.

After capturing these shots of Nicole, it was time to get over to the Church in Randolph to capture Nicole’s arrival there.

Being new to the region this wedding gave me the chance as a Boston wedding photographer to shoot in a new location. The First Baptist Church in Randolph is a great building and provided the perfect backdrop for Nicole and Shane’s big day. It was a beautiful ceremony and you could tell that this was a very special group of friends and family attending.

After a wonderful wedding ceremony we made the most of the unseasonably warm weather and move outside the church for the group shots. The guys were looking very dapper and Shane was looking just as smart as the day I had first met with him and Nicole back last Spring. They were all really great fun to work with.

Nicole and Shane had a wonderful reception planned and I’m sure that they had the day that they had exactly planned spending their MA wedding day in the company of great friends and family.

Cambridge MA engagement shoot

After our couple of attempts at an engagement shoot over in Cambridge with Caleb & Melissa were foiled by some heavy rain, last Monday we finally got a great evening. We started off over by the John Week’s footbridge over the Charles River and it provided a wonderful backdrop on an evening like this.

Caleb and Melissa had been recently engaged, and are currently planning what sounds like a wonderful wedding ceremony up in the far north of Maine where they are both from. This was my first engagement shoot in Cambridge MA and it really did provide some amazing settings to work with. Not only is the John Week’s bridge a fantastic spot, but also just down the road you have some great architecture to work in. It is a great place for having your engagement or family photos. We got a few shots there, as well as having a nice relaxing time by the river in the evening sun. The trip into town away from the river yielded some other great spots, and the light was absolutely wonderful that evening.

With the sun dropping down over the city, we managed to get some great shots of Caleb and Melissa together in the wonderful warm light to give another feel to their engagement photos.

Moving more into the urban setting gave us the chance to work in some of the unique architecture and the variety of it in such a small area gives the Boston wedding photographer plenty to work with. This again gave Caleb and Melissa a different feel to some of their shots, and all done without having to move very far from our original starting spot. This is nice as it gives us more time to work and get some great photographs without getting too tired moving between locations.

This engagement photography session in Cambridge ended with a few final photos around the Harvard Lampoon Building. This well know Cambridge landmark made for a great spot for engagement photos in Boston and the light at that point in the evening was just about perfect.

Important photographs on your Boston wedding day

What are the most important photographs on your wedding day? As a Boston wedding photographer, the shots that need to be captured on any wedding day are always at the forefront of my mind. These can be broken down into several categories and it is important that a balance is achieved in all of these.

Let’s start with the preparation shots. Not everyone opts to have shots of themselves getting ready before their ceremony, but this has become far more popular in recent years. This is, after all, a big part of the day and there are some great emotions that can be captured during this part of the day. The girls have their bridesmaids bustling around, helping get their dress and veil just right, and the guys are with their groomsmen, trying to figure out how to attach a boutonnière, with the best man re-reading his speech for the nth time. There are nerves, excitement, the occasional tear, and capturing the last few moments before they become man and wife often produces some classic photos.

Then we have the ceremony itself. Boston weddings can take place in a variety of locations, and the churches and venues here in New England are indeed stunning. This part of the day is obviously full of very special moments: the bride’s arrival at the ceremony, the groom ready and (nervously) waiting for his bride to be at the end of the aisle, and my favorite moment, the first time the groom and his bride see each other. Some additional must-have shots are the father walking the bride down the aisle and handing his daughter over to the groom, the ring exchange, the first kiss as husband and wife and the newly married couple’s recessional after the ceremony.  These are wonderful shots to have, but so are the emotions shared by the parents and other family and friends at this very special time. With quick reflexes, it is possible to capture all these memories.

Next we have the group shots. These are sometimes played down these days and can be considered a little outdated at times. These are important shots, though, and rarely will such an occasion arise that you will have so many family and friends that mean so much to you in the same place.

Shots of the bride and groom together as husband and wife make for some of the most memorable (and most printed) photographs of the day, so you want to make sure that you set aside enough time for these. Boston wedding photographers can be spoilt for choice when it comes to locations for these shots. Whatever the location though, shots of the bride and groom together will always be a special remembrance of the day and their love for each other and these shots should reflect that.

After this comes the feasting and celebrations. You are with your guests and are now able to kick back, relax and enjoy their company. Candid shots here can capture the great relationships that you share with all that are attending your big day. Important shots to nab as well are in the small details. Place settings, flowers, the room, everything that you have poured your time and careful planning into over the course of your engagement. The rings, polished up and new, may be borrowed by the Boston wedding photographer to capture them up close. Also, don’t forget the cake, the cutting, and then the bride and groom sharing the first bites.

Last, but by no means least, comes the dancing. This provides great shots with everyone getting into their favorite songs. Whether you and your guests are completely unaware of the camera or playing up for it, you can be guaranteed that these will provide a source of pleasure for years to come afterwards.

Boston Wedding Photography at Henderson House

The past weekend was a busy one for me, sending me to Wells, ME on  Friday for an engagement shoot and a gallery opening, and to Rockport, MA on Sunday for another beach-side engagement shoot. In between, I had the chance to shoot Brooke and John’s Boston wedding celebrations in Wellesley, MA.

The ceremony took place in Saint John the Evangelist’s church, and the reception was at the beautiful Henderson House just down the road. Both locations were stunning and just a short distance apart giving plenty of time to get some great Boston wedding photos.

The ceremony was lovely, and was shared with a wonderful group of friends and family. Saint John the Evangelist is a truly standout church and the perfect venue for a Boston wedding celebration.

Henderson House was a new venue to me, and it was really nice to come across this grand old house tucked away in Wellesley. Henderson House offers the Boston wedding photographer some wonderful shooting opportunities and with such a great group of people at the wedding, it was easy to get some really nice shots for John and Brooke.

The gardens at Henderson House provided the perfect setting for the guests and the bride and groom to enjoy the great summer weather and really make the most of the cocktail hour. Matching the house in its grandeur, the gardens provide any Boston wedding photographer a great location to capture some of the wonderful candid moments that arise during wedding celebrations.

Brooke and John’s wedding had an extra element – John’s side of the family is from Trinidad and Tobago, and the calypso drum player during the cocktail hour added a wonderful sound to this spectacular location. It is one of the things about being a Boston wedding photographer that I really enjoy; seeing these personal elements of each family being incorporated into the big day, making each celebration very much unique and its own affair. You would probably not have paired Henderson House with calypso music, but it was a combination that created an atmosphere that I’m sure Brooke and John will remember for years to come.
